To me, what Manson talks about speaks a lot about what Generation X has felt for years. The only difference is that Manson acts it out in his music and shows. Wanting to empathise life and sometimes getting the shit kicked out of y'all and lucky to be alive. Except Manson accepts what happened to him and what he has go. Others like him would have go drunks or the lower rung of gild. Manson has turned it upside downwards and become what well-nigh fear. I have a fascination with Marilyn Manson which has been stirred upwards by recent news about his deformed skeleton collection and nazi tiles in his library. Although I couldn't put the volume down, it was actually much more agonizing than I could accept imagined. His philosophy of satanism/elitism makes him think he is much more intelligent than everyone else, but his writing (even with a "co-author") suggests otherwise. The lyrics, poems, and stories remind me of the crap I wrote in eighth grade. Substantially, his motorcar-biography is about what happens when you never mature past 15 only suddenly become rich and famous.

ETA: I, in NO WAY, approve of nazism or personal human medical specimen collection. What acquired me to exist curious was the audacity of this cruelty and wondering whether this was persona or how he really lives. He is a narcissist who thrives on shock value.

Over the years, Manson has said some intelligent things, and every now and so I recollect he'due south probably a pretty cool guy.

But, whenever I offset thinking that, I flashback to the scene in this book where the whole band is gangbanging a deaf groupie who is covered in lunch meat--No, really. Tiffin meat.--while screaming insults at her.

I hateful, actually. If you're going to shag a lunch-meat covered groupie while insulting her, have the assurance to do it to a girl who tin can HEAR y'all.

I hateful, really. If y'all're going to shag a lunch-meat covered groupie while insulting her, take the balls to exercise it to a girl who can HEAR you.

I really don't care about his honorary priesthood in the church of satan. To an atheist, that'due south nearly as scary every bit if he told me he was the Koopa Kid in charge of Bowser'southward Castle in Globe 6. It's stupid and/or meaningless. I gauge that, equally readable and bizarre as this volume was when I read it in high school, the problem is that Manson only tries so very hard to be shocking. Dude, doing weird shit to groupies was already washed by the Go-Become's. THE Go-GO'S.

Ozzy flake the head off a live bat. Keith Richards snorted his dad'south ashes. Bill Hicks was imitation-assassinated on phase. You've merely got more makeup than the average Cure fan, and a good for you appreciation of recreational drugs. You're really not that special.

I decided to dive into this book because, while I never really liked Marilyn Manson's music or his band'southward style, I have e'er idea he is an intelligent person and I have ever taken a look when he has appeared on talk shows. Recently, he was featured on Bret Easton Ellis' podcast and his take on humanity, American consumerism and the media have never been more relevant.

The starting time of the memoir started tiresome and used clichés — delight don't describe a scene by maxim it was similar a poorly made scary movie, depict information technology then I experience that way, considering otherwise I should probably just sentry a poorly made scary picture show. As he becomes cooler, however, the story improves and so does the writing.

The parts about drugs were honest and I love that Marilyn Manson, contrary to most conceptions of Satanists, is an atheist. He started out normal, became a superstar and then plant himself dorsum where he started.

The downfall of this book was that it contained too many previously written entries that I hardly cared for, including stories he'd written equally a child and manufactures written about him.

The best line of the book —

"About of the time, I wasn't interested in inflicting hurting on myself and others unless it was in a style that would make people call up well-nigh the manner they deed, the guild they live in or the things they take for granted."

I recall the controversy Marilyn Manson created in the mid-late 1990s. These were my centre school and freshman/sophomore years of high school so the MTV generation was still at information technology's peak. There were small cliques of kids who obviously were fans (Marilyn Manson t-shirts, goth make-up and the accouterments, etc.) and so there was anybody else. There was controversy over his satanic-fueled rhetoric, his advent, and his reputation with drugs, sex, and the Rock 'n Curlicue civilization. Students, th I remember the controversy Marilyn Manson created in the mid-late 1990s. These were my middle school and freshman/sophomore years of high school and then the MTV generation was still at it'southward peak. There were modest cliques of kids who obviously were fans (Marilyn Manson t-shirts, goth brand-upwards and the accouterments, etc.) and then at that place was everyone else. There was controversy over his satanic-fueled rhetoric, his appearance, and his reputation with drugs, sex, and the Stone 'n Ringlet civilization. Students, the news, the church, and parents were all against him in some fashion.

Brian Warner (afterward to become Marilyn Manson) is an interesting story but crass and vulgar. He rated his childhood from below-average to boilerplate. His story tells emotional neglect (from his father), overprotective tendencies (from his mother), resentment towards Christian values, early exposure to sexual perversions, and the lack of balanced parental involvement that created Marilyn Manson. He writes his perceptions of being the victim throughout the years: by teachers, older kids, organized religion, rejection from girls, and lack of fulfillment personally and professionally.

The starting time-person writing is pretentious and considering he views himself every bit an intellectual elitist (pg. 168) who is in command. Only he displays self-destructive behaviors with alcohol/drugs abuse, lack of self-respect, and a negative self-image. "I was becoming the cold, emotionally crippled monster I always wanted to be, and I wasn't sure I liked it. Just information technology was too late. The metamorphosis was already under way.", pg. 126

I think he has stiff narcissistic personality traits because of his sense of importance (seeing himself as the Antichrist), lacking empathy, and disregarding the feelings of others. Throughout the book he exemplifies coldness and feelings only become important they are his own. He consistently demonstrates poor insight, poor judgement, and sabotages his interpersonal relationships with everyone he gets close to. He likes to blame Christianity and society with themes of hypocrisy, male-domination, and abuse/victim social constructs. The Marilyn Manson identity is just a mask to comprehend the real Brian Warner. We only get glimpses of him because this is HIS autobiography. Narcissistic personalities hibernate who they really are and create a different version of themselves for others to see; they fright making themselves vulnerable and assuasive themselves to become "victimized" once more.

I but read this because I grew up when Marilyn Manson was at the height of his controversy. He eventually petered out and began irrelevant. I would only recommend information technology if you're a fan of his music and you want to read his story (up until 1998 at least). Thanks!

I'grand not even sure what this was. An elaborate performance piece? 300 odd pages of bollocks? Thinking it's legit is merely too sickening actually. Again. Information technology's been twenty years since this was published...

I'm not even sure what this was. An elaborate performance slice? 300 odd pages of bollocks? Thinking it'due south legit is simply as well sickening really. Once more. It'southward been twenty years since this was published...

In fact, twenty years ago was when I discovered The Dope Bear witness. I was a pretty isolated kid in a musical sense. My mum wasn't into music and I didn't accept an older sibling to introduce me into anything... or any friends really. But during my first year of loftier school the older kids on the omnibus used to give tapes to the driver to play which is what introduced me to Marilyn Manson, specifically The Dope Show. (Information technology besides introduced to me The Offspring and Faith No More than and a diverseness of other musicians. There was also that really memorable fourth dimension The Roof Is On Fire was playing and the driver lost his mind because of the lyrics and ripped the tape out of the player and threw it down the bus... lengths of the brown inner tape streaming behind the plastic cassette as it flew downward the isle... simply that's off topic.)

Mechanical Animals was my OG teen angst tape. It holds a special identify. Simply this is pre-internet everywhere. Pre-smart telephone. Pre knowing everything about anyone fifty-fifty vaguely in the spotlight. Non that I'k sure my twelve year old self would take cared. Give thanks god twelve year old me didn't read this. Or teenage me at all considering I had already bought into the ~cool girl myth~, I didn't need the extra, overwhelming misogyny this volume would have given me.

And that's what it is. Misogynistic. If Brain Warner ever manages to shut up about how poorly women treat him, being duplicitous and deceitful and generally not telling him every single detail of their lives, and then peradventure he might be able to concord upwardly a mirror and realise that he's just describing himself. Not once in this volume does he manage to care for a woman nicely. At whatsoever point. He regularly cheats, lies and is a general pig (there's even a list of what is and isn't cheating... I imagine the listing for his prospective partner is probably dissimilar) but is incensed when any of the women in his life even vaguely care for him in the same vein.

Even more horrifying is the way it'due south just casually mentioned how they treated their fans. Specifically Twiggy whom allegedly raped Jessika of Jack off Jill, briefly mentioned inside equally some sort of "roadie". Covering girls in meat products, spitting into orifices, screaming at deafened people... There'south just layers and layers of violation of consent throughout this entire affair. At points you have to cease and wonder if information technology's just an elaboration to prove some sort of sick point masquerading as art.

In that location was a point where I might have considered Manson somewhat intelligent. That was awhile ago, pre Dita, pre Evan Rachel Wood, pre friends with Johnny Depp and pre that time I finally saw him in concert and it was so fucking awful considering the dude was smashed out of his fucking mind. Whatever little shred of that was left is gone after this. He'due south just another white dude who thinks his opinions are and then revolutionary that he's blinded just his ain lack of originality.

Utter trash.

EDIT: four/2/2021 - In the offset paragraph of this review I made the comment that "thinking it'due south legit is too sickening". Turns out it is legit. This is the person that Brain Warner is. As multiple women come frontwards with their harrowing experiences of abuse at his hands nosotros have been made aware exactly the blazon of person this guy is. It's non some act. It's simply a vile (racist/rapist/abuser) man who has told the public in multiple interviews and in this book the exact person he is. I regret purchasing this book. I regret having any of my coin become into this reprehensible excuse for a human'south pocket. Fuck him. Fuck anyone who continues to defend him.

I am a huge fan, actually enjoyed reading about the man earlier the star. I would have rated 5 stars, nevertheless, I feel the timeline was too soon. As other reviewers have pointed out all the really interesting stuff from MM came afterwards this volume was published.

This volume is about him, his journey, not and then much about beingness a rockstar. He is not a typical rockstar. Similar, yep, and he is an entertainer, but he is not the garden variety rocker that is all almost sex and drugs and alcohol, etc. At least in the beginning when this book came out that was the evidence, merely his message is what mattered.

I have met him and had an interesting and amusing conversation with him dorsum when this book came out, and believe it or not he is very shy.

What Marilyn Manson is all about is challenging us to look at what is happening effectually the states, question say-so, milk shake things up, etc. Things we should practice w/o the need of an creative person/rock star to tell us to do. He knew what needed to be washed to get to where he is and he predicted what would happen along the way. He is non just Marilyn Manson the rock star like Alice Cooper or Buss are shock-rockers. There is more to it than that. He became this matter considering we needed it to happen. Nearly like a superhero comes forth because lodge needs him to. He is at that place to be a scapegoat much like the president or god/jesus/satan. Information technology is not only for the daze of it and testify of it similar KISS and Alice acknowledge to and joke virtually it being an act for coin.

Brand no mistake HE IS A TRUE Creative person. One of the very few in the music concern. He has concept albums that tell stories, Antichrist Superstar is a story from get-go to cease of a rock star similar him. For example, the lyric "world spreads it'south legs for some other star, world shows it's face for another scar."

People who criticize him and simply don't go it are the ones he targets with the shock stone function, however, there is much more to it, to him, than that. That is just the surface. There are layers to his piece of work, all the albums take a theme and have depth and diverse art and imagery from those eras mixed in and often times subconscious. Why would the guy go to the lengths he does if he doesn't care? He wouldn't. Why would he almost quit the business concern and become a recluse when it all goes a bit besides far, similar existence blamed and berated for columbine to the point he can't take it? Why wouldn't he only say information technology is an act and be done with it all? That would be the easy thing to do and what someone that doesn't care would do. Merely he didn't, he endured it and he is still around and he learned from it and grew up a niggling.

Equally far equally the religion aspect, I am non going to go into that too much. Only I will say he has a message, non a organized religion. Satanism is not almost the devil, merely is all nearly cocky-preservation. Christianity is all almost control, telling people they are not good plenty on their own. They need god's strength, blah-blah-blah. Manson is challenging that. More people should question it and think about it and they are. That is why Manson is what he is. This is why he attracted the attention of his mentor and friend Trent Reznor, another great creative person (more than in terms of music/prouction) that would not accept supported Manson all those years if he wasn't an amazing talented artist. Manson was on Trent's label and Trent made sure he had more liberty to exercise what he wanted west/o the record label messing it upward. They accept all this drama around them at present, and it is too bad Trent didn't try harder to help his friend that struggled with the aforementioned issues Trent himself and damn near all stars go through...

More recently Manson got sucked into it all and started with the drugs and condign more and more similar a manifestly old rockstar. I promise he tin break out of that. We need artists similar him around. We need more than books telling their story.

Although not entirely about religion, the book does comprehend a lot of basis in that surface area. Seeing it from Manson's perspective, on top of what we see in the media, even today, information technology'due south not difficult to work out who the real evil doers are. Liberty of voice communication is a birthright and organized religion and politics should never mix. In a world where at that place is a lot of talk, and while I don't condone the drug use or sexual conduct of the homo, Manson is one of very few with something to say that is worth listening to. Required reading.

The boy that you loved is the human being that you lot fear.

I started listening to Marilyn Manson when I was about 12 or xiii, determined to wear black lipstick and piercings all over my face and fix to shock everyone in my family.
Now, virtually 20 years later the piercings are gone and the only time I might still look shocking is after yet another sleepless night (teething is hard!).

Journal entries, interviews and a lot of photographs added to the feel of diving into the mind of this shrewd, peculiar, extraordinary creative person.

The fabric was initially eccentric enough to exist interesting but as my senses dulled the volume became increasingly tiresome. Manson is never able to overcome the powerful angst that he feels as a youth. Instead of trying to develop his graphic symbol, he fuels his angst with drugs and acts of stupor. He continually brings up his religious and philosophical studies but unfortunately elaborates much more on his dark nightmares, psychedelic trips, and backstage drug-addled experiences. Throughout the book he identifies and attempts to humiliate individuals by relating subjective stories near their personalities and their situations. I was disappointed to find his account filled with contempt, revenge, and misanthropy rather than a discussion around radical individualism (think Ayn Rand). ...more

In a word, he reveals himself like one would reveal a unsettling slice of art; in his case, a self-assay all at in one case sickening, tearing, reflecting a human being confessing being 'ravaged by drugs, tiredness, paranoia and depression', but displaying his failure and weaknesses in such a theatrical mode that he manages to turn it all into a fascinating show.

The whole is shocking, abrasive, repulsive, exposing sickening behaviours at times; but among this drugged narrative are also squeamish pearls of wit showing Marilyn Manson for what he is: a pure production of a certain America -conservative, bigot, hypocrite, violent. I for one in any case, who love his music merely dislike the human being (for being a drug addict with no restraint), found the volume interesting enough to exist a nice curiosity.

Interspersed with crucial encounters with Trent Reznor and Anton Lavey, this journey through Hell (catastrophe with the coming out of the 'Antichrist Superstar' anthology) will, I remember, please the fans while showing others that beyond Satanism and drugs Manson remains a clever guy who knows exactly how to button where America hurts the most. I like his music (I was a big fan when I was a teen, I confess having outgrown him a chip...) merely the guy disgusted me then much at times (some of his fans have serious issues, and he shows himself using and abusing them mercilessly backstage -information technology's crass!) that I can't give this more than such a depression rating. Neil Strauss coauthors this one, and I've enjoyed his journalism. He does well transitioning from articles to books, and he has a way of getting beneath the surface. He balances things well and if he presents his reader with something especially intense, he provides some room to recover.

This is a volume about Marilyn Manson's early life and career. It'southward not unicorns and rainbows. Frequent extreme linguistic communication, sexual situations, drug/alcohol abuse abound. Manson also uses religious imagery in his performances, twisting it in means that can offend.

I will start by proverb that I'm not big on autobiographies at all. In my mind those are for uninteresting people who's fabricated no touch on on the world what so always and who wants to read about them. However, for many years I've been a fan of Marilyn Manson's music and equally an ignorant 15 twelvemonth old I considered Brian Warner a person I had things in mutual with and respected very much.

This volume shows exactly why some people should never write books nigh themselves. The idea of reading Marilyn Manson'due south biography did of class capture my interest but information technology really didn't alive upwards to my expectations. The first one-half of the volume is basically dedicaded to his childhood (of course) and family unit which I establish very dull and predictable. Of grade the whole MM concept is based on rebellion confronting a childhood trauma (his parents put him in a Christian school, weep me a river) like anybody else's.

Admittedly this was at times interesting to read. I'k a fan of absurd and original people and of form I wanted to know more about how this human being is thinking, his views and philosophies. Near irrelevant things that has happened to him in the past - not so much. I feel like an autobiography should really contribute with something more than than boring teenage years' stories and this book didn't. Like how he lost his virginity - I don't give a crap! If you're gonna tell every detail no 1 cares about maybe you should just expect until your death bed and then you tin can make sure y'all get everything.

The balance of the volume is not so much about his music as it is about grotesque anecdotes and drugs. He tries and so hard to showcase his hardcore, supercool rock due north roll lifestyle information technology looks dumb. Maybe I'thousand just sensitive just some of the things were merely disgusting.

On the plus side some parts made me laugh and I liked the illustrations. I however think he'due south an interesting character even though I have problem respecting people with drug habits. In the future I will just watch interviews because this volume does not do him justice.

I'm non a fan of his music at all merely WOW, what a roller coaster of a read this autobiography was. Don't be fooled, Manson is uber-intelligent. The levels of depravity he reaches is simply shocking. What did surprise me though in the last few chapters dealing with personal confessions is that this satanist is frightened by nightmares and still fears the nighttime (?).

- 'As a bipedal animal, man past nature gravitates towards his evil side, which may be one of the reasons people always ask me about the darker half of my name but never almost Marilyn Monroe. Although she remains a symbol of beauty and glamour, she had a dark side only as Charles Manson had a good, intelligent side. The remainder betwixt good and evil, and the choices we brand between them, are probably the single most important aspects shaping our personalities and humanity.'
